Rock held her, his own body on fire. Kelli was incredible, every bit as hot and sexy as he'd always known she'd be. He cradled her limp body gently against his and listened to her soughing breaths gradually even out. He stroked her hair away from her face and kissed her forehead. "Sleep," he murmured, his body still shaking with need but his mind, his heart, content.

"But..."

"Shh. It's all right." And knowing exactly what she'd say, what she'd suggest, he lied, "I don't have anything with me. We can't take any chances here. The last thing you need is to get pregnant." By me, by a man you want only as a friend.

Tilting her face up to his, her small hand over his heart, she looked at him with big soft eyes shadowed with indecision. "I could maybe…?"

He closed his eyes, fighting the urge to say yes. "I'm all right." He kissed her forehead again, unable to stop touching her. "It's late, the snow is falling again so it may get even colder. You're hurt." He shrugged. "The timing is way off."

She looked guilty, which only made him love her more. He gave her a smile of reassurance and a slight squeeze, careful not to hurt her. "Really, Kelli. I'm fine. Now just sleep, okay? I'll hold you and we'll keep each other warm."

She ducked her head down, pressing her cheek into his chest. "You're the most amazing man, Roddick." Then sleepily, and so low he barely heard her, "I can't believe I never realized it." Minutes later she drifted off, her breath warm, faint against his skin.

Rock stared at an intricate cobweb in the corner of the ceiling. Sleep eluded him for long hours, but the indecision of the future weighed on him. Would this interfere with their relationship now? Would Kelli awake embarrassed, with excuses tripping off her tongue? Would she turn shy on him?

Would she demand more?

When he did finally fall asleep, it was with the conviction that no matter what, he wouldn't let her draw away from him, and he wouldn't let her use him. This would just be one more experience in a lifetime of shared memories. They were friends and he fully intended to make sure they remained friends.

The harsh glare of sunlight on new snow blinded Rock as he opened his eyes. The blanket was over him, tucked in even, but Kelli wasn't in bed. He came up on one elbow — and saw her sitting at the small table. She'd put her leggings back on and had her feet — now snuggled into a pair of his large thick socks — propped on the other chair close to the woodstove. She was reading a letter.

His letter.

"What the hell are you doing?"

She glanced at him, smiled, and left the chair to come to the bed. Without an ounce of modesty or uncertainty, she leaned down and kissed him full on the mouth. "Good morning." Then, a twinkle in her eyes, she added, "Rock.
